The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) stamp is the final seal of authenticity that the UAE government places on foreign documents before they are accepted for visa applications, employment, court proceedings, business setup or any official use. Without it, your document, however genuine, will be rejected.
What Is MOFA Attestation?
MOFA attestation is the UAE government's formal verification that a document has been legally authenticated through the proper chain in its country of origin. It proves that the signature, seal or stamp on the document is genuine and that the issuing authority is recognized.
Which Documents Require MOFA Attestation?
- Marriage certificates
- Birth certificates
- Educational degrees and transcripts
- Experience letters and employment contracts
- Power of attorney
- Company incorporation documents (for business setup)
- Court judgments and legal documents
- Medical certificates
The Full Attestation Chain
MOFA attestation does not happen in isolation. It is the final step in a multi-stage process:
- Local notarization: The document is certified by a notary public or the issuing government authority in the home country.
- State/federal authentication: For countries with a federal structure (India, USA, etc.), the document is authenticated at state level first, then national level (e.g., MEA in India, Secretary of State in the USA).
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country: Stamps the document confirming it is genuine.
- UAE Embassy in the issuing country: Verifies the MFA stamp and adds its own authentication.
- UAE MOFA: Final stamp, confirming the UAE Embassy signature is recognized.
Apostille countries (Hague Convention members): For countries like the UK, India (from 2005), USA and most of Europe, steps 3 and 4 are replaced by a single Apostille certificate. The UAE began accepting Apostilles in November 2021 after acceding to the Hague Convention.
How Long Does MOFA Attestation Take?
The UAE MOFA step itself is typically completed within 2–5 working days once the document arrives. The bottleneck is almost always the earlier stages in the home country, which can take anywhere from one week (UK, US) to three or four weeks (some African and South Asian countries).
MOFA Attestation Cost
The UAE MOFA charges a standard government fee per document. Additional charges apply for each preceding stage (embassy fees, home country MFA fees, courier). Clear Docs provides an all-inclusive quote upfront so you know the total cost before we begin.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Submitting a photocopy instead of the original document
- Skipping a step in the attestation chain (each government checks the previous stamp)
- Documents that have expired or been reissued, the fresh copy needs its own attestation
- Getting the Arabic translation done before attestation (translation should be done after the final MOFA stamp)
